SUMMARY:SOCH's September Mental Health Community Conversation
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to talk about men’s mental health on September 17th\, 2020. It is time to breakdown the stigma and encourage men to seek help. \nOn September 17th\, 2020\, we are going to bring together men to share their experiences and discuss their point of views on Modern Masculinity for 2020 and beyond. \nThe goal is to make a positive change\, to have a healthy community conversation surround what is means to be a male in today’s day and age. Our goal is to facilitate an open dialogue to pull back the curtain on the stigma surrounding mental health. \nSOCH is a mental health promotion initiative started by two registered nurses from Brampton\, tailored at providing the South Asian community with education\, awareness\, and resiliency for mental health. As a community initiative\, SOCH’s aim is to first ‘start the mental health conversation’ to break the stigma in the South Asian community and second\, to empower the community with the skills and knowledge to navigate the mental health system\, support loved ones\, and most importantly\, take a preventative approach to caring for one’s overall well being. \nWe as South Asian males should be encouraged to learn more about the symptoms and signs of mental health problems and for men to have the opportunity to share about their lives. Mental illness effects everyone and knows no boundaries\, we should all be comfortable seeking help when needed.

SUMMARY:Mental Health of South Asian International Students
DESCRIPTION:SOCH Mental Health would like to engage with South Asian international students to better understand their mental health challenges.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nThis discussion will be facilitated by two South Asian mental health nurses who co-founded SOCH Mental Health. The aim of our conversation is to better understand this community’s mental health needs to inform our project with Sheridan College as well as create a series of workshops to support this student population. Please only sign up if you are or have been an international student & identify with the South Asian community. \nThis conversation will be facilitated in both English & Punjabi. \n\n\n\n\nPlease register at link below.\n\n\n\n\nA zoom invitation will be emailed to you before the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJasmeet Chagger (RN\, BScN\, MSc(c)) & Maneet Chahal (RN\, BScN\, MSc) are two passionate community change-makers. They have over 8 years of mental health nursing experience and have closely witnessed their family and friends to struggle with mental illness. \nAlong with working in the field of mental health\, Maneet finished her Masters of Nursing in 2018 which looked at the South Asian Punjabi community’s experience of accessing mental health services for depression in the Region of Peel. \nJasmeet is currently working on her Masters of Science in Nursing. Her thesis is looking at the impact of problem drinking on South Asian Punjabi families and is working away to complete her research this year. \nBoth best friends co-founded SOCH Mental Health and kicked off their very first workshop in April of 2015. SOCH takes a health promotion lens to empower the community with mental health knowledge through education\, awareness \, and building resilience.

SUMMARY:One Step at a Time
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to talk about men’s mental health on June 22nd\, 2020. It is time to breakdown the stigma and encourage men to seek help.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nOn June 22nd\, 2020\, we are going to bring together men to share their experiences and become educated on the mental health services that are available for everyone. According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada\, 80% of all suicides are committed by men. \nThe goal is to make a positive change\, to have an educational event about men’s mental health. We will be featuring health care professionals and open a dialogue to pull back the curtain on the stigma surrounding mental health. We have partnered up with the SOCH mental health team. \nWe as Canadians should be encouraged to learn more about the symptoms and signs of mental health problems and for men to have the opportunity to share about their lives. Mental illness effects everyone and knows no boundaries\, we should all be comfortable seeking help when needed. \nEvent Agenda: \n\nGeneral mental health discussion (the difference between mental health vs. mental illness)\nThe importance of self-care\nHow to reach out for support\n\n  \nRegister Today For This Online Event! \nhttps://www.eventbrite.ca/e/one-step-at-a-time-tickets-107355005712?aff=efbneb
