SUMMARY:Harm Reduction in the South Asian Community
DESCRIPTION:Come join the Soch family as we discuss different ways to navigate recovery from substance abuse. \n \nFacilitator Name: Varun Joshi\, PhD(c) \n\nFacilitator Bio: Varun is a PhD candidate at the University of Guelph who specializes in environmental criminology and a member of Soch’s Men’s Mental Health Team. Prior to pursuing graduate school\, he worked in a variety of front line public service positions\, including in a peer support role facilitating substance abuse support programs for youth experiencing homelessness in Ottawa\, Ontario. Varun’s workshops explored the different relationships individuals can have with alcohol and how people experiencing substance abuse can approach recovery in a way that is suited to them. Soch has provided Varun with an opportunity to engage in mental health support with the community he was raised in and enjoys providing services in both English and Punjabi.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nSubstance abuse is a sensitive topic in the South Asian community for Indians and diaspora\, especially pertaining to alcohol. Opening up about having problems with drinking can be met with a variety of responses that can leave those suffering feeling alone and without support. Come join the Soch family as we discuss different ways to navigate recovery from substance abuse. Abstinence is often seen as one of the only avenues of support\, but this is not the case and we will explore how Harm Reduction can play a role in recovery for individuals that experience any form of substance abuse. This event will be facilitated from a peer support perspective where individuals are invited to share their experiences and learn how to begin conversations around addressing problematic relationships with alcohol.
