Autism- My Family’s Secret | ਆਟੀਜ਼ਮ- ਮੇਰੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ਼

The focus of this workshop is to discuss the stigma affiliated with having a child with an autism diagnosis. This workshop will implement the art of storytelling to explore the mental health impacts on parents and caregivers. Core themes of this workshop may include South Asian cultural beliefs, family pressure, and societal pressure.

Presenters Bio

Maneet Chahal (RN, BScN, MSc) & Jasmeet Chagger (RN, BScN, MSc(c)) are two passionate community change-makers. They have over 8 years of mental health nursing experience and have closely witnessed their family and friends struggle with mental illness. 

Along with working in the field of mental health, Maneet finished her Masters of Nursing in 2018 which looked at the South Asian Punjabi community’s experience of accessing mental health services for depression in the Region of Peel. 

Jasmeet’s Masters of Science in Nursing thesis explores the perceptions of alcohol use and the experience of Punjabi families impacted by problem drinking. 

SOCH is a community mental health initiative aimed at breaking the silence about mental health in South Asian families.
